Autumn Clothing And Style: A Guide to Layering

by Jamie Simpson

As the temperature drops, it's important to know how to stay warm and still look cute. One of the easiest ways to do that is by layering your clothing. Women's clothing is especially easy to layer, but not everyone knows how to do it correctly. Continue reading to learn how to layer your clothing so you can create an autumn outfit appropriate for any weather.

Why Should I Layer?

Layering clothing is an easy way to show off your best look and stay comfortable. You can combine clothing in unique ways so you won't wear the same thing twice. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to develop a unique style that's entirely yours. Even better, if it gets warmer than you expected, you can take something off, such as an extra shirt.

However, throwing on a random bunch of clothes isn't layering. If you do it wrong, instead of looking cool and stylish, you might end up looking completely ridiculous and like you don't know how to match your clothing. Layering women's clothing is an art that you may have to practice.

How Do I Layer?

Keep in mind that black makes you look slimmer, so it's often a good choice for a main colour. You want your top half and bottom half to complement one another. This means that when you're wearing skinny jeans, you can wear something baggier on top, like a sweater. But when you're wearing loose pants or flared jeans, wear something fitted on top, such as a vest. This keeps you from looking like a shapeless blob.

Leggings are a good start since you can wear them under other clothing. Then, choose an undershirt to go under your main shirt or sweater, such as a cardigan or a t-shirt. Something bright or colourful that will show through in a few places is a good choice. The next layer could be a vest, a sweater or a ruffled shirt. If you're normally modest, this could be a fun time to play with a shirt that has an exceptionally low neckline, since you're wearing a shirt or two under it.

As it gets colder, you can wear a long-sleeved shirt with a short-sleeved shirt over it. Under the main shirt, consider adding a camisole with a different neckline, lace or ruffles for a different texture. You can also wear a camisole with a very long t-shirt or long-sleeved shirt under a sweater. Not only will it keep you warm when your outdoors, but if you go inside where it's warm, you can remove the sweater and still be wearing a few layers.

Colour is important with layers. Make sure to choose a variety of colours that match and different shapes for shirts and necklines. Emphasize the parts of your body that you like the most. You may have to try a few times before you can consistently achieve the look you want. With practice, you can look amazing, feel warm and be comfortable.
