Creative Summer Fun for the Family

by Curt Gutierrez

The heat is here which means summer isn't too far behind. There are only a few weeks of school left which means it's time to entertain the kids with some summer fun activities. Here are a few places in Houston that perked the ears of the creative spirit and kid in me. Many of these activities are also friendly to the pocket book!

If you have not been to the Children's Museum of Houston stop what you are doing and go now! This museum was rated the #1 children's museum in the country by Parents magazine. Museum hours are 10am-6pm Tuesday through Saturday and Sunday 12-6 pm. There is a general admission, however check their site before you go because they always have a free or discount day on the calendar. Their range of spectacular exhibits that are deceptively fun. Kids think they are just playing but each exhibit is designed to also teach and motivate children to learn, enhancing motor skills, communication skills, and social skills all at once. An example would be the exhibition "Kidtropolis USA" where children work together to take on various roles to run the city. It is also a tremendous opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their kids!

Discovery Green Park is an amazing venue for all ages and has many free events for all ages. Why is it called Discovery Green? It was created utilizing eco-friendly building techniques and materials and is also managed in a green way. This park offers 12 acres nestled in the heart of downtown Houston near George R. Brown Convention Center and the Toyota Convention Center. Many of their events are geared towards the children and families of Houston, such as Toddler Tuesday and Wiggle and Giggle Wednesdays. At these events kids will enjoy story time with fun characters as well as creative activities. Discovery Green has an extensive calendar on their website with music events and other fun activities, year round. They also offer "Fitness in the Park" on the calendar for those of you that want to do some yoga or take a dance class for free!

Next on the list is Family Day at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. This museum's admission is always free and so is there family day. Each family day offers something new to do. The art activities and entertainment are designed around the exhibition so that families can relate to the exhibition through understanding processes and inspiration. For an exhibition featuring artists that experiment with sound children were asked to make creative instruments and noise makers out of provided materials. To further engage the kids are the CAMH's very own Teen Council, a group of Houston area teens selected each year to create programs and activities that engage Houston Youth in art. Check their calendar for Family Day dates and times.

Across the street you will find the Museum of Fine Arts Houston which also collaborates with Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens to offer its own spectacular themed family days geared towards bringing the Houston community together in appreciation of art. The activities and entertainment are a eclectic range and never dull. Check the MFAH calendar for a schedule.
