Should Women Get An Easier Tee On The Golf Course?
Why should women get an advantage?
You may have noticed that in many sports women get an unfair advantage. In tennis, they only have to play a match with a best of 3 sets, while the men have to slug it out over 5 sets. This means that over the course of a tournament the winning male has to play many hours more to get less prize money. While they do get a bigger prize cheque, when you divide that up into amount paid per game, the winning woman gets more money.

You could argue that in tennis, men have a physical advantage so should be made to play longer to be able to push the top players to the limit, but when it comes to golf, where the top women can out-drive many of the men, should they not all hit the ball from the same tee? While tournament rules do push women back from the 'ladies tee' to the 'seniors tee' and the men move back from their regular tee to a 'championship tee', women are still left with an advantage.

It's Just Not Fair

One argument is that in a world of equality, sporting gender separation should be eradicated. Women should be made to play off the same tee as men, they should compete in the same tournaments and football teams and go for the same gold medals. The idea that just because one human being has different body parts is unfair, as top level female athletes are capable of competing at a very high level and so should be made to play by the same rules as men. Even if they still had separate tournaments they should still have to play off the same tees and have the same number of sets.

It Is Completely Fair

A counter argument is of course that the current set up is completely fair and women should be allowed an advantage for their naturally weaker physiques. There would be very few women leading the world in most sports if they competed on the same stage with men. By allowing women an extra few yards in golf you allow women the opportunity to play more on an even keel with men who can hit the ball just that little bit harder.

The thing is that most sports were designed with male physiques in mind. While men excel at running and throwing and contact sports, women actually have an advantage in sports like synchronised swimming as their lower centre of gravity and natural buoyancy give them an advantage.
