WHAT NOT TO GIVE ON MOTHER'S DAY AND WHY
What Is Mother's Day?
Mother's Day is a day set aside to honor and celebrate mothers. It always falls on a Sunday and is always in the month of May. On that day, mothers receive gifts and Mother's Day cards from their husbands, children, or grandchildren. Even some women who are not mothers, but who have had a mother-like influence in someone's life may also be given gifts and pampered on Mother's Day. Mothers are cherished on that day and are often taken out for dinner so that they will not be driven to cook. Older children will often do Mom's household chores for her on that day so that she can relax. After all, it is her day!
How Did Mother's Day Get Started?
Mother's Day as we know it in the US actually started in 1907 by a woman named Ana Jarvis. She appreciated her own mother so much that she wanted to make a national holiday which would celebrate all mothers. Mother's Day was to be on the second Sunday in May, the anniversary of Ana Jarvis's mother's death. She convinced her church to make this day a day of celebration to honor all mothers. As interest in the idea grew favorably with other people, including politicians, the day became a national holiday in the US. Even before the holiday was officially made a national holiday by the then president, Woodrow Wilson, Mother's Day was already being celebrated all across the country.
Despite the popularity of the holiday now and then, those were not the original origins of Mother's Day. The idea has been traced all the way back to the days of ancient Greece where people held a festival to honor what they believed to be the mother of all gods, Rhea. By the 17th century, people in England held a special day to honor mothers. This day was known as 'Mothering Day' and on this day the servants were allowed to take this day off to spend with their own mothers. The idea of Mother's Day in the US goes back to the days of the Civil War. Julia Ward, the woman who penned the lyrics to The Battle Hymn of the Republic came up with the idea first. Her idea was called Mother's Day for Peace. This idea came to her to promote peace after so much bloodshed during the Civil War. The day was to be celebrated on June 2, however, this celebration only lasted a few years which after people simply began to lose interest after the war ended.
What Types of Gifts to Give and What Not to Give For Mother's Day
What type of gift to give would depend on whether you are her husband or significant other, or if you are her child or another relative. Husbands and significant others should never give cooking utensils or cleaning appliances on this day! A son or daughter, as long as they no longer live at home, can possibly get away with giving this type of gift. Flowers, though traditional, are almost always appreciated, even expected. Try to get her a unique array of flowers for a change of pace. Of course, jewelry or watches are gifts that she will always love you for! Whatever you get for her, try to make it personal and she will really appreciate it!
