What is a search engine?

Search engines are programs which are designed to search for information stored in a computer system. This system could be a personal computer, a corporate network or the World Wide Web. Search engines are mainly used for information retrieval and for research purposes. Here the person looking for information on a particular topic tries to find out all information related to the topic using the search engine. For example, in Google a person wanting for find out information will enter keywords related to the topic in the search engine text box and on clicking the search button a listing appears of all sites related to the topic. Search engine in the general sense refer to the web search engine, which is used to search information in the World Wide Web. Another kind of search engine is the enterprise search engine, which is used to carry out searches in intranets or corporate networks. You will also find personal search engines, which are used to search individual personal computers. Though each of these search engines is different from the other in the search criteria used to perform searches, they are all designed to perform the same task, which is carrying out effective searches and users of these search engines will find not apparent difference between each type. Looking into the history of search engines, the first search engine that came about is the Wandex. Another early search engine is the Aliweb, which first appeared in 1993, and still runs today. The first "full text" crawler-based search engine arrived in 1994 and it was called the WebCrawler. This search engine set the standard for all major search engines. Other popular search engines that followed this are Excite, Infoseek, Inktomi, Northern Light, and AltaVista. They took to competing with popular directories such as Yahoo and later the directories integrated or added on search engine technology for greater functionality. Search engines are an important search tools. Without search engines consumers, researchers and analysts looking towards the internet for information will have a difficult time to retrieve what they want from the net. Even businesses today design their website to be search engine friendly because they can reach out to their customers faster if their website comes within the top ten listing on the internet during a search.
