San Francisco Divided

by Robert Nickel

San Francisco is home to the largest Chinatown district in North America, birthplace of the Hippie Movement, and was the center of the California Gold Rush. Yet there is so much more to the city, so much that can only truly be appreciated with an open mind and an appreciation for culture. So, when preparing for a visit to the great city of San Francisco, be sure to pack sunscreen, good walking shoes and a liberal point of view.

Three different administrative districts call San Francisco home. Ten districts of the city are showcased here, to show the exploration potential of the most interesting parts of the city.

The Magnificient Golden Gate

Perhaps the most famous of all the districts, this is also the most fashionable in terms of residential real estate. Golden Gate holds most of the history of the region, and there are landmarks for every important chapter.

Fabulous Fisherman's Wharf

This is the tourist district. Alcatraz is on the horizon, seafood restaurants are everywhere, and a souvenir for every taste.

The Fashionable Russian Hill

Russian Hill (or Nob Hill) has more real estate that is fashionable, complete with large price tags and service staff. All the ritziest hotels are on Russian Hill, sitting atop steep hills and overlooking San Francisco Bay.

Exciting Chinatown (North Beach)

Chinatown is old, historic and extremely crowded. This is in stark contrast to its neighbour, Little Italy. San Francisco's Italian district is laid back, less crowded and a true delight.

Union Square

Union Square This is the financial district of San Francisco, where the theatres, art museums, skyscrapers and all the best shopping is found.

The Tenderloin

The Loin is a grittier version of Union Square and Russian Hill. There are many attractions, fabulous architecture and plenty of shopping, but with a less ostentatious feel.

South of Market

This is the up and coming area of town, where the newest skyscrapers are slowing reaching for the clouds. The most current galleries are here, and the home of the San Francisco Giants.

Western Addition

West Add is where all the Victorian homes of San Francisco are located. Also, the Japanese district is here, complete with Japanese restaurants, hotels and shopping that caters to visitors from Japan.

Haight

Haight is the home of the Hippie Movement, bohemia at its American best.

The Avenues

Within the Avenues are the communities of Sunset, Parkside, Ocean Beach, Golden Gate Park and Richmond. Hanging in the air among the Avenues is the familiar and humid San Francisco fog.
