Protecting Your Home

Don't Become a Victim

by Shawn Parker

Through out American homes are broken into every 15 to 20 seconds. Don't be the next victim. Make sure your doors and windows are kept locked. In over one-third of the burglaries, the crooks either come through an unlocked door or window. Use your locks. You need to install single-barrel deadbolts, (this type of lock is the one that uses a key on the outside and a lever on the inside), on all your lower level floor exterior doors. Don't exclude the ones from the garage to the house doors. Sliding door need to be reinforced by either a cut-to-fit dowel or a stick or broom-handle cut to fit in the rack.

Lock all windows on all levels of your home. Close your drapes before you leave your house. This will eliminate passer-bys and trespassers from seeing what you have inside your home. A light turn on at night by a timer will give the impression that someone is home. Never leave your home totally dark.

Neighbors helping neighbors. Don't leave a spare key under your doormat, in the flowerpot or hidden under a rock, thieves always look in these places. Leave a key with your neighbor; this will eliminate who enters your home. Going on vacation, contact the local police department, asking them to check your house out while your gone.

Get a home security system; homes with them are three to four times less likely to be broken into. The visible placing of decals and signs so passersby see them is a strong deterrent. Adding a broken glass sensors to your windows and sliding glass doors will cost a little more, but is worth the extra cost.

Thieves use items in your yard to get access to your home. Don't leave ladders in your yard. Make sure there are not low tree limbs that they could use to climb on to get into your home. Exterior lights with motion sensors are a must to have. Someone getting to close to your home at night will have a spotlight on him or her.

Last suggestion never ever post your name on your mailbox. Never! Anyone can all 411 and get your phone number and call to see it you are home. Thieves do this all the time.
