What to Look for in a Lasik Surgeon

Once you have determined whether or not you are a possible candidate for surgery you should then commence shopping for a suitable Lasik surgeon. Even though the risks of Lasik are reasonably less than regular surgeries, you must still continue researching a Lasik surgeon seriously. Take the standard precautions of evaluating, setting criteria, doing your research and understanding what will occur in the surgery.

Implement a set of criteria that you will hold each surgeon to. Negate to base it solely on cost or on the doctor’s experience only, but take all criteria into consideration. This decision will affect you for the rest of your life, not the surgeon’s.

Again, evaluate what each surgeon relies on as their technique of choice. Do they rely on the normal Lasik that uses a blade to make the incision or do they use “bladeless” InterLase lasers to deliver all of the cuts. Ask what they consider to be the most dependable and what they do the most.

Educate yourself upon what can occur during the surgery and ask your potential Lasik surgeon how they handle a situation that could potentially culminate in a procedure. There is a chance a mistake could lead to permanent damage to your eye without even the opportunity to have corrective surgery.

Do your homework to navigate clear of scams related to the “20/20 vision or guaranteed money back”. Make sure you check these doctors against the consumer affairs office or alternatively the better business bureau or any other consumer related body to ensure that they do high quality practice. In addition to this, understand what your rights are when it comes to having surgery and LASIK in general.

Question your surgeon in pertaining to how he manages post surgery situations. Question your Lasik surgeon regarding how they handle migration of the flap, inflammation or infection, intensive eye drop treatments, or additional procedures after the initial surgery.

Lasik surgeons are also held to an FDA standard regarding the type of laser used during the surgery. Ensure you determine what laser your potential surgeon uses and double-check it against the FDA’s approved list.
