An Introduction to Climatic Test Chambers And How They're Used

What climatic test chambers are and how they are used.

by Chad McDonald

A climatic test chamber is used for almost any kind of testing and may include prototype evaluation, research & development testing, production testing, accelerated stress testing, reliability testing, failure analysis, etc. In fact, any such application that requires climatic simulation can be tested through a climatic test chamber.

Climatic Test Chamber: Climatic Simulation

Temperature, humidity, altitude, vibration, solar, wind & rain, dust, etc. climatic test chambers can simulate virtually any kind of climatic condition. You can find these test chambers with interior workspace for 1.2 cubic feet. For cold chambers, the temperature capabilities can start down to -300 degree F, and for the extreme high temperature conditions, it can even go up to +1000 degree F. The interiors of these chambers are made of stainless steel with powder coated finishing.

There is a long list of climatic test chambers available on the market. Some of them are mentioned below.

Highly Accelerated Life Test

This test chamber is used to locate a product weakness and assess its life. It performs such functions with a combination of temperature, shock and vibration.

Highly Accelerated Stress Screening

This climatic test chamber works by using fast temperature cycling, and is specifically designed to be used for production units.

Temperature chambers

Test chambers are used to simulate temperature and analyze the effects on a product over a range of temperature conditions. It can also perform temperature cycling by combining climatic conditions, such as humidity, altitude, and vibration, etc.

Humidity Chambers

Humidity chambers are used to simulate humidity and consequently tests the effects on the product over different humidity conditions. This test chamber can perform its function either with or without temperature.

Bench up Test Chambers

These test chambers require very little floor space in comparison to other test chambers. They are specially designed to test small products.

Thermal Shock Chambers

This test chamber shocks and stresses the product thermally, by rapidly changing the temperature from extreme cold to extreme hot.

Liquid-to-liquid Thermal Shock Chambers

This test chamber performs its function by immersing a part or assembly in hot and cold liquid. In order to perform the test on a particular product, the product is allowed to pass through the hot and cold liquid without any contamination.

Air-to-air thermal Shock Chambers

This climatic test chamber works by transferring the product from a hot chamber to a cold chamber, and they are available in various configurations, including two zone, three zone, and double duty.

There are many other types of climatic test chambers available on the market, including altitude chambers, climatic stress screening chambers, walk-in chambers, drive in chambers, etc.
