Simply put, power flushing of central heating systems is the flushing of the 'heating circuit's' pipework, heat emitters and boiler heat exchanger with high velocity low pressure water. A Power flush will clean hydronic central heating systems all with the aid of chemicals. Nowadays, there are many variations of power flushing units available and they all basically do the same job. Most of the power flushing units on offer can perform reverse flow circulation, water dumping to remove sludge, limescale and dirty water, water replacement and chemical treatment; all essential issues when keeping your central heating system up and running. If for some reason air gets into a hydronic central heating system, corrosion will take place in the pipes. This can cause huge build up which then leads to blockages which could stop the whole thing from working efficiently. Limescale build-up is equally as serious to the health of your boiler as it can damage the heat exchanger through insulation which causes the heat output to reduce and for the boiler to ultimately fail. The power flushing unit is usually connected to the hydronic central heating circuit through the circulator pump's unions directly after the pump has been removed.

The build up of limescale is just as important to the health of your boiler as it can damage the heat exchanger through insulation which then reduces the heat output of the boiler which causes it to finally fail. Generally the power flushing unit is connected to the hydronic central heating circuit through the circulator pump's unions right after the pump has been removed.

Depending on which product the plumber uses, sometimes they will get pump 'adaptors' that will connect onto the circulator pump. This works well as it eliminates the actual removal of the pump and makes connecting the power flushing unit easier. The power flushing unit is then connected to the heating circuit by draining the boiler first and ten going in and disconnecting the boiler's main flow and return pipes. Now the power flushing unit can be connected to the primary flow whilst the boiler is disconnected. Now that the power flushing unit is connected and up and running, you will have to make sure that both the dumping and overflow hoses terminate at a suitable drain.

They should check that your heating system is open vented because if it is then once you have isolated the water supply to the 'feed and expansion cistern/tank' by wither closing the service valve or by tying off the ball valve. The next step is to then drain down the 'feed and expansion cistern or tank into the unit. The productivity of your boiler can be improved greatly with power flushing. The unit will restore systems with circulation and eliminate and boiler noises which are usually caused by sludge deposits or corrosion.

Power flushing gets rid of all the nasties in your boiler and returns it to optimum operation. It is very important to power flush a heating system just before fitting a new system in order to prevent potential problems in the future. Your system could contain corrosion and sludge even if it isn't showing any symptoms so it is important to check. Debris in your heating system can be moved by making some changes to the system or the pipes which can cause accumulation in the boiler heat exchanger. The accumulation sometimes causes noise, a reduction of heat production and then even failure.

Nowadays, modern boilers are often highly efficient and compact which can contribute to problems with debris in the system water which is why power flushing is so important. When the power flush is finished, your system should now only have clean water. It will take a few minutes for the heating system to return to normal. Although a power flush can be a cure for a number of problems within the system, it will not remedy bad installtion problems such as poor design nor can it cure mechanical faults. Therefore you must ensure that your system is installed by a register, qualified and honest plumber.
