What Are The Risks For Having Pregnancies Too Close Together?

by William Jason

It is very rare that a woman will get pregnant again a few months after giving birth. This unlikely scenario does not happen very often because of a number of factors.

The biggest reason is because most couples understand that having two babies so close together is not a good idea. It is pretty well-known that a woman goes through a great ordeal both during her pregnancy and labor, which requires her to rest for anywhere from a few weeks to several months, before she is fully healed from her pregnancy. This of course is why so many couples wait for almost a year or even longer before they decide to have another child. It simply is not worth the risks that another pregnancy could have on the expectant mother's body, or the fetus. In fact, many experts recommend that you wait for at least two years before having another baby. Nature also has a way of protecting a mother after giving birth, by making it difficult for her to conceive if she is breast-feeding.

Not only can it be a risk to the expectant mother to become pregnant again so quickly, but it also can be quite difficult to take care of just one baby, let alone a second one in such short order.

However, despite all of these scenarios, this does not mean that some women do not get pregnant quickly after giving birth, despite the risks. If a woman gets pregnant 6 months or earlier after having her first baby, there is a greater risk for having a low birth weight baby, a premature birth and even elevated risks of having a child with autism. This is because the mother's body hasn't had sufficient time to heal properly and replenish her store of nutrients that is required for having a healthy baby.

This of course does not mean that these scenarios are going to happen, but there is a greater risk that they could occur. As with your first pregnancy, you want to take as many precautions as possible and most especially take your prenatal vitamins, eat a healthy diet, and avoid all tobacco products, alcohol and cigarettes. The worst thing you can do is to stress yourself out about becoming pregnant again so quickly, as this could easily cause complications for your unborn baby. The most important thing to keep in mind is that while the risks are elevated for these types of pregnancies, in most cases women who have babies closely together generally end up having a healthy baby.
