Black Friday: An American Institution?

by Brett Klein

A glut of spending shopping, Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving, when department stores from coast to coast march out deep markdowns to bribe patrons from bed. Black Friday rings in the official kickoff of the holiday shopping ruckus. The nickname Black Friday is derived from profit and loss statements where losses are traditionally accepted as being "red" illustrating the damage incurred in the financials; the reverse in profits being known as crossing into the black which yields the name.

For retailers, Black Friday will likely register as the most rewarding sales date of the fiscal year and is a gauge of what the rest of the buying season will bring. Given a prosperous Black Friday Rush, sales managers are able to typically hold their price points and presume that their Christmas inventory will be picked over. Conversely a wobbly Black Friday suggests they must proceed with dialing in the deals on holiday goods to unload enough by Christmas Day.

Retailers lean on a few traditional marketing strategies that have come to be mostly reliable. Many slash the prices on just a few well-known items, occasionally even letting them go at below cost, on the assumption that consumers could pick up a few regular priced impulse buys for their friends and families. Another ploy is to mark down every item as cheap as they can and achieve profitability through high volume. In any case holiday shoppers should expect to save a ton of money this Christmas shopping season as most stores slashe prices. Have a good Black Friday and be safe out there!
