Steinway Pianos: A Pitch Above The Rest

by Paul Malcolm

Steinway & Sons have been in the piano making business for well over 150 years. Their superior craftsmanship is evident in their pianos which are carved from the finest of materials. They manufacture three main types of pianos: the Essex, the Boston and the Steinway at the top of the food chain. The Steinway brand, which they manufacture, is the crème de la crème of all pianos.

Steinway pianos, made by the legendary Steinway & Sons, all come with elegant ebony finishing. For a custom finish, you can request one of the crown jewel veneers that the manufactures offer. From a walnut finish to an East Indian Rosewood, your desires will be well met. For those with deeper pockets, you could opt for a limited edition piano such as the one commemorating John Lennon.

The piano is easily the world's most popular and easily identifiable musical instrument. It has been used extensively in classical and jazz music and is slowly creeping into other music genres. There are two main basic piano types, upright and grand. The frame and strings of the grand piano are horizontal unlike the vertical orientation in upright pianos. The popularity of this instrument is such that toy versions have been made. Digital keyboard and piano apps are modern reinventions of this instrument. Almost every new professional piano has 88 keys (36 black keys and 52 white keys). They are also equipped with foot pedals just like a car. They are there to create different sound effects like the delaying the sound of a note. Most pianos in the US come with three pedals while those from Europe come with only two.

One might think that getting a piano is a troublesome quest thanks to the large varieties available but it actually is not. One way to ensure that you get the best for you is to assess your financial status. If you can afford the grandest of pianos then go for it, if not then you must be content with one of lesser value. You must also calculate how much room you have in your house or studio before heading out to purchase one. Grand pianos occupy more space than their upright counterparts. If you are really short on space, then a digital keyboard might be fit for you. If you are buying it for someone then it would be wise to know their tastes. The age of the person might come in handy. There is no need to buy a grand piano for a baby.

When it's finally time to visit a piano store, then there are certain things you have to look out for. Many piano stores stock both new and used pianos. If you want a new piano, then I would suggest you go for the recognized brand names such as Steinway & Sons. Try not to listen to the attendants in piano stores too much since, many of them are salesmen and all they simply want to do, is improve their sales quotas. If you want a used piano you better get a technician to check the quality of the piano and if it's still usable. You may also want to get a smaller piano as the grand pianos; especially those from pre-World War Two are an excellent investment but are quite expensive.
