Any four wheel drive or 4wd will give you better driving experience due to the better road grip it offers. A 4 wheel drive van thus can be the best of both worlds in terms of spaciousness and driving safety. In fact, today, a 4wd van is also considered a symbol of good taste and high fashion! So if you are looking for enhancement in car status, go in for a 4wd or 4 wheel drive vehicle. This vehicle can be a very niche segment indeed.
If one were to look at the history of the four wheel drive van then we would notice that it basically originated due to the need for a family to have extra space. Interestingly, the demand for a awd van saw its morphing from a depot hack to a classy vehicle. At one point of time, the closest available option was the good old station wagon which was synonymous with leisure suits and checked trousers! Today, you have some pretty classy looking options in this segment. The vehicle has thus turned full circle.
The depot hack was perhaps the seed for the present 4wd van. In the 1920s, the depot hack was used to ferry people between train stations. People and their luggage could pile into a depot hack and make their way to their destination. It was also sometimes referred to as a Suburban. Leading car manufacturers of the era produced this vehicle quite successfully too. Then the Suburban evolved to going from a truck to a car frame. The accent during this time was on space for big families and their gear as well.
A while later, it was the turn of the minivan to come into the spotlight and that became a stronger reason for the resurgence of the 4wd van. While there was not much of emphasis on the fuel efficiency of such vehicles, the awd van became a popular choice among a cross section of the public. The one remarkable feature of the 4wd van has been its ability to reinvent itself and innovate into something the public wants.
Today, the average 4wd van is able to deliver on promises of power, fuel efficiency and practicality too. In terms of solid performance, the awd van can be an epitome of everything right. A powerful engine - 3.3 and up to 4 liter V6 engine with tons of torque and great horsepower deliver exactly the kind of power that the driver needs. All the systems like electrical and electronic also keep pace with the driver's requirement of reliability and performance. The interiors of the awd van also deliver comfort and design aesthetics. Space, performance and design thus come together in a 4wd van.
