All together, the west has over 53 National sites, and most of the state have exemplarystate and local park systems as well.

4. Check Out the Small Town Museums (as well as the most popular ones)- Some of the most interesting museums are those that are not on the map, like the town museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local people gathered paraphernalia from their town spanning a century and a half. A lot of them are popular but a number of the most beautiful are off the beaten track and sometimes require a long or even overnight backpack to get to. One of our top choices is Fremont Lake in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. This mountain lake is circled by steep ledges and jagged mountain peaks that were created by the retreqating glaciers of the last ice age. The Wind River mnts. are reknow for fishing and backpacking opportunities. Another spectacular lake in the Wind River Mountains is Lonsome lake located near the Cirque of the Towers in the southern section of the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming.
