Facing The Future With Acid Reflux - The Unknown
As with all medical conditions, there is only a certain amount that we know about acid reflux. We are aware of what triggers it, what's in it and what symptoms it has, which enables effective treatment of many cases, but what happens when doctors have to treat someone whose condition is advanced beyond our knowledge? Some of the unanswered connections of acid reflux are discussed below.
Non-Acid Reflux: Fairly self-explanatory, non-acid reflux is pretty much the same as acid reflux, but occurs when a non-acidic mixture is sent up the oesophagus towards the mouth. It's thought that this is only caused when bile gets regurgitated, but this isn't confirmed. It's also unknown how damaging non-acid reflux can be.
Heart Burn and Acid Reflux One aspect of acid reflux that is undergoing constant examination and testing, is finding out why heartburn can happen when the oesophagus isn't damaged, and more interestingly, why patients who have identical amounts of acid reflux and experience the same symptoms, can have completely different amounts of acid reflux.
Barrett's Oesophagus Treatment About 10% of those who suffer from acid reflux also suffer from Barret's Oesophagus. Despite the low percentage, it is worth treating, as it's thought that there may be a link between the two, ultimately leading to cancer in the oesophagus. If you have gastro oesophageal reflux disease, or acid reflux, it's advised that you have periodic tests to check that you don't have cancer developing in the oesophagus, particularly if you get bad heartburn.
Sometime in the future, scientists and doctors will be able to make more accurate recommendations on how to deal with acid reflux, but unfortunately, current knowledge isn't sufficient for every case.
Until that time, you need to take care, keep in regular contact with your doctor, and pay attention to developments in the field. If you're interested in it then medical journals won't hurt, but pages of endless black text aren't for everyone, and there's really no need to subject yourself to it. Just stay alert and do what your doctor says.
