Go Green At Disney
If you are planning a vacation to a Disney theme park, you don't have to leave your green sensibilities at home. The Disney World resort in Florida features some innovative transportation, recycling and water conservation efforts, and allows guests to stay in eco-friendly style. While you're on site, keep an eye out for these green places and spaces:
Wellness Suites: Opening in 2012, the Wellness Suites at the Contemporary Resort are designed to be a green paradise. Built with sustainable furnishings and with an eye towards health and wellness, these suites are designed with the eco-friendly traveler in mind. This floor offers furnishings made from bamboo, organic cottons textiles and a dedicated kitchen featuring local and sustainable food offerings. If you are visiting Disney World prior to 2012, both the on-site Wilderness Lodge and the nearby Disney Hilton offer eco-friendly lodging and food options.
Eco-Friendly Transportation: Since the 1970s, Disney has offered the ultimate in gas-free travel--the monorail. Staying in a monorail resort will cut your travel time and the amount of time you spend driving around. The monorail is free for guests, holds hundreds of passengers at once and can get you from your resort to the Magic Kingdom or Epcot without using a drop of fuel. Disney also offers large capacity transport options in the form of buses, boats and trams.
Stay Green in the Parks: The Disney theme parks offer eco-conscious travelers the opportunity to buy both organic and fair trade merchandise from all over the world. The Animal Kingdom theme park takes this initiative a step further; the park does not distribute plastic cups, lids or straws, cutting down on waste. This location also offers a chance to visit the "Conservation Station" an environmental education section accessible by train and included in your park admission. Conservation Station is home to a variety of education programs designed to promote awareness about the environment, from the hazards of over consumption to the plight of endangered species.
The Animal Kingdom theme park is an excellent place to go for a reminder of "why" it is important to be eco-friendly. From the exotic animals who live here to the educational programs offered about them, guests are immersed in a conservation-friendly environment from the minute they enter the front gate.
Dine Like a Local: Several Disney World restaurants specialize in locally grown and sustainable food items. Located in the Land pavilion in Epcot, the Garden Grill features sustainable fish and produce grown hydroponically on-site. This pavilion is also home to an environmental education show featuring the cast of The Lion King; be sure to check out the "Circle of Life" environmental program when you visit.
Both the Wave and the California Grill restaurants offer the best locally sourced seasonal fruits and vegetables. The Wave also features a vegan menu and a "Sustainable Fish of the Day" option. Both restaurants are located on site in the Contemporary Resort.
