The Real Nerd Watches Documentaries Online
I will admit it; I am a nerd. In fact, I am a huge nerd, and I have been this way for a long time. When I was a little kid, I preferred watching documentaries about Sub-Saharan wild cats instead of your typical brain-numbing Saturday morning cartoons about bionic men or mutant reptiles. I loved learning everything about ancient Egypt and could tell you exactly who Zahi Hawass was, whereas I could not identify for you any of the He-Man villains. I never grew out of this phase and still love to watch documentaries.
Since I have moved to The Big Apple, where rent is sky high, I could no longer afford cable. No cable meant I had no History Channel. No Discovery Channel. No History International. No documentaries for my sad little nerd mind to absorb on Saturday mornings over coffee.
Until I found I could watch documentaries online.
Overjoyed I sprinted to my computer, opened up my favorite free movie sites online, and watched the entirety of Ken Burns' documentary on The Civil War in just a few days time. I learned more about Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and John Adams from free documentaries online than I ever did from my civics class in tenth grade.
I moved on to watching another of Ken Burns' documentary series about the national park system. I found a new heroes and a deep desire to go to every single national park. I then moved on to African rhinos, migration of birds, and even aliens from our ancient past.
It might seem that this could make for a very boring watching experience but I love it. If I could get paid to sit around and watch documentaries, I would be a millionaire, a happy millionaire. Learning, for me was always a joy, even in high school history classes. Being lectured at can get seriously boring, even for a lover of learning and knowledge like me. I admit to zoning out and falling asleep during some civics or German classes. The teachers that would mix it up and show documentaries, they were my favorite. I still learned a lot from them, even if they just showed us videos.
Documentaries aren't just for us dork-minded either. I've sat my friends down for a night of Jazz by Ken Burns or How Weed Won the West and they've loved it! Once I ran out of movies on one free movie site online, I simply moved onto the next!
