The Age of Style
At what stage does a person develop a sense of fashion?
There are some children in this world who unquestionably have amazing style. Perhaps it's their parents who dress them or perhaps they've got their own creative ideas, either way, it kind of makes you wonder at what age and stage people develop a sense of style.
It might start with a dress up box, or perhaps it began when you first started watching Sex and the City, or it could have been the way you worked your school uniform to make it your own. A sense of fashion comes at different times to different people, but the interest needs to be there. People who enjoy fashion are experimental with it, even if they don't get it right every time. And that's where the little girl who stomps her feet and refuses to put on the suitable pink dress her mother picked out because she wants to dress as a firewoman to go to church, comes in. It's the person in high school who braved all sorts of different looks and didn't really care what anyone said. The person who wore pink with red, who wore stripes with spots, fur on the ski hill and big hats at the beach.
It can be difficult though to find your sense of style to know what's in and what looks good on you. That's where models, celebrities and fashionable friends come in. Choose a few people who you consider fashion icons and have a similar body to you. Model some of your looks off of them. Tall thin women for instance do really well with oversized shirts, sunglasses and stacked bangles, but women with curves would probably just get lost in that look. They need something a bit more form fitting to show off all that they have to offer.
The most important thing is to have fun with your clothes. When you see something beautiful and playful in a shop, buy it, even if you can't think of how you might wear it now, it could come in handy in the future. Every day should be a bit of a dress up party. Do your hair and choose your jewellery to suit your mood. If you're after a chic look you might opt for a sharp pair of cufflinks or a smart watch. If you're after something fun and fabulous maybe big, gold hoops would be more suitable.
Don't be afraid to try different looks, those who don't try don't ever succeed either.
