VOIP Helps You Avoid the Frustration of a Conventional Phone Line

Voice Over Internet Protocol is a great way to make the most out of having a land line telephone in your home or business. That's because even though VOIP technology- as it's known for short- was originally developed as a way of using the Internet to get around tolls on long distance phone calls, newer services provide a lot of features that make it a good alternative to all types of phone calls. In fact, the new types of VOIP services available can make it so that you can do away with having a conventional land based phone line altogether! The idea of getting rid of a conventional land based phone line has a lot of appeal to a lot of people. This is especially true for anyone who's watched their phone bills go up over the past decade or so. Part of the reason for the increase is caused by the fact there are more useful features that can be added onto a phone line than there ever have been before. These are things that make communicating over the phone so much more convenient and safer like caller ID, call waiting, and call forwarding among others. But even if you try to go with a basic phone line without all of the bells and whistles, you'll still probably find that it costs a lot more than you would think. One thing that's extremely aggravating is that the costs for a basic phone line are itemized in such a way on the bill that it's not unusual for about half of the fees to be associated with taxes of various sorts.

When you look at VOIP services though, they offer calling plans that cost about the same amount as a basic phone line from a conventional phone company, but with a big difference. All of the extra services that cost so much more from a conventional phone company are included in that cost. In addition, most VOIP plans also include unlimited domestic long distance.

With all of these benefits to going with a VOIP service, it may be tempting to stick it to the phone company by dropping your conventional phone line in order to make the switch. While this is definitely an attractive option, and probably the best one for a lot of people, there are some things to take into account before making the plunge.

Perhaps the most major thing that you need to consider before making the switch to a VOIP phone service is that you need a high speed Internet connection in order to do it. Of course, that's what would allow you to drop your conventional phone line completely, but not all high speed Internet technologies are created equally. For example, even though high speed Internet service over satellite is extremely fast, because the signal has to travel back and forth from satellites, there's a noticeable time lag that would make VOIP service extremely frustrating to use over such a connection.

Another thing that could make it so that you can't give up your phone line with VOIP service is if you get your high speed Internet service over a DSL connection. Even though DSL is fast enough for VOIP, it requires a phone line in order to function. Get rid of the phone line and you can't have VOIP.

The best type of Internet service for use with VOIP is broadband cable. That's because broadband cable is always on, doesn't have a time lag, and doesn't rely on phone lines. Therefore with broadband cable, you can stick it to the phone company when going with VOIP service.
