You Need To Develop These Parenting Skills
Some people believe parenting should come naturally, and that it's an instinct we're born with. This may be true to some extent, but we live in a complex world and sometimes we have to learn new skills in various areas of our lives, and this includes parenting. What comes to us most naturally might be good but for some of us, we're simply repeating the same mistakes our parents made. So it is a good idea to look at your own style of parenting as objectively as you can and try to figure out whether or not some changes need to be made.
We all already know how important it is to praise children but be conscious of how you go about this. Some parents aren't good at praising their kids enough and others praise their children but not in a way that is helpful to the child. For one thing, it's best to praise kids for something they've made a real effort in rather than something they have no control over. If a child is naturally athletic, intelligent or attractive, lavishing praise upon them for these natural tendencies might be counter-intuitive because it could cause vanity or even arrogance. On the other hand, offering praise to a child for working hard studying for a test or on the sports field or in their school play is helping them continue to do their best.
Every parent feels frustrated, angry or just plain overwhelmed at times. When this happens, it's time to take a break. You should set up some resources so that there are people who can take over for you when you need a break. You can ask babysitters, friends, family members and even your own partner for help here. It is a good idea to have more than one person on this list because not everybody is always going to be available. Even if you haven't yet reached your breaking point, you need to have some free time to spend by yourself. Sometimes you don't need a lot of time; even a fifteen minute walk around the block can give you a new perspective. You'll be a better parent if you take some time for yourself and don't try to be the perfect parent 24 hours per day.
As a parent there are going to be some styles that come naturally to you but, particularly if you tend to vacillate between extremes, there are some styles that deserve some modification. There are some parents who are very strict and authoritarian and that is a reflection of how they were raised. Today, though, kids need to be taught to think for themselves and if you are too strict this won't happen, your kids will either be extremely docile or extremely rebellious. On the other hand, if you are too permissive with your kids, they won't ever learn boundaries and will probably grow up without much self discipline.
Studies have proven that the best parenting style is what is called authoritative parenting which lies between permissive and authoritarian.
The parenting skills we have explored in this article are just a few considerations that every parent needs to be mindful of. Parenting skills can involve a lot of different things like listening to your kids and understanding when discipline needs to be given. Being a good parent means striking a balance between being involved in your child's life and also helping him/her learn how to develop their own abilities.
All of these parenting techniques can be helpful for you and also for your boy or girl, however they probably won't give good results if you have problems in your marriage.
