Vertical Blinds: How to Operate and Clean Them Correctly

by Jamie Simpson

Many modern homes feature vertical blinds. These window coverings often prove ideal for hanging over large windows and patio doors, although they may also be used to cover windows of all sizes. They can be purchased at many retailers and can be custom ordered by decorators to match any person's decoration scheme for his or her home or business. Indeed, vertical blinds make a handsome addition to any home or business and their longevity and usefulness may be prolonged by properly caring for them.

In fact, these blinds commonly feature slats made out vinyl, fabric, or metal. Each material calls for different care techniques. For example, vinyl vertical slats are often susceptible to collecting dust and dirt, especially if they are hung on windows that receive a great deal of natural light, that are open frequently to allow in the breeze, or windows that are adjacent to doors that are opened and closed frequently. Such natural elements invite dust and dirt to accumulate on the vinyl slats. To care for vinyl blinds, owners should routinely dust their blind with a feather duster or a damp cloth. If the blind becomes heavily soiled, the slats can be washed with a mild soap and warm water.

Similarly, metal slats also tend to gather dust and dirt. Like vinyl, metal can be cleaned with routine dusting and occasional cleaning with soap and water. However, if the metal slats become wet, they should be dried immediately to prevent the slats from rusting. If the metal becomes kinked or bent, owners can gently attempt to pop the kink or dent out by applying gentle pressure to the disfiguration. People who have small children or pets often choose to avoid buying metal blinds because of the risk of damage to the blind. They choose vinyl or fabric instead.

Indeed, fabric vertical blinds tend to be very popular for use in homes. This material is reminiscent of draperies and gives the window a softer look without the hassle and expense of fabric curtains. Most manufacturers apply a protective spray to their fabric blinds. As such, families with small children tend to favor these window coverings. The protective application makes it easier for parents to sponge out stains caused by fruit drinks, pizza sauce, carrots, and other food items that may leave stains. Further, fabric vertical blinds may on occasion gather dust and dirt. However, instead of using a feather duster or a damp cloth to clean the blind, owners can use a hand held vacuum cleaner or a vacuum extension hose to remove the debris.

Operating these larger blinds proves to be simple. They can be opened and closed by utilizing the pull cord that is located on the right side of the blind. However, a left-handed person can request the pull cord be placed on the left hand side to make it easier to open the blind. A tilt wand hung on one side of the blind allows the slats to be tilted in one direction.
