Spring Cleaning: Organizing Your Home and More

by Mark Etinger

Come springtime we feel an instinctual urge to clean our domiciles and start anew. That said, here's how:

1. Mopping: It's important to keep your floors clean and with regular sweeping they probably stay so. But you should mop at least monthly. If you don't now's the time.

2. Kitchen: Underneath furniture, wiping down the walls, and generally making sure that everything that you don't normally clean is. If there have been marks or stains you've been ignoring recently, now's the time to clean them up. That includes your refrigerator, stovetop, drawers and inside your microwave.

3. Organizing Products: Perhaps your closet has fallen into a state of disrepair over the winter. If you visit an organizing store for some new closet hangers or storage you may be surprised at how much space you can create. That and you won't be bombarded with falling sweaters every time you look for your favorite pair of pants.

4. Indoor Lighting: Light is important to cleanliness. Think about it, Golem lived in a dark cave, thus he was dirty. So invest in some new indoor lighting for the areas of your home that could use a little pick me up and you will be happy you did.

5. Bathroom: This one may be the most difficult, but you'll feel the best about it when it's done. Get down on your knees with some rubber gloves and scrub all those often overlooked areas. When you're done the smell of bleach will be a pleasant reminder of all your hard work.

6. Discard: All the stuff you've been saving for goodness knows what? Get rid of it. From papers and Christmas cards to old shoes and clothing, it's better off in the garbage if you don't make daily use of it. And for special things you want to save, put them in a shoebox at the back of your newly organized closet.

7. Outside: Tending to your garden can be a fun pastime for a Sunday morning. Trim the hedges, cut the grass and feel the earth. You will be surprised at how in touch with nature you feel afterwards.

8. Windows: Washing all your windows will allow you to better see the outer world as well as let more sunlight stream clearly inside. And what did we say about more light in your home?

Such a thorough cleaning may take a few days or even a couple of weeks. But don't despair, once the warm weather comes, you'll be glad you're no longer living in squalor, and you can look forward to another cycling of the seasons before you have to again work so hard. And don't feel bad about asking your loved ones to help either.
