Jewelry by Occasion
Most people divide their jewelry into a few categories- special occasion, everyday, and costume. Special occasion jewelry is that which we lock up in our safes and only pull out when we have somewhere very nice to go. It usually consists of heirlooms and birthday presents from loved ones. Everyday jewelry are the special little items that can be worn with everything. They are easy to sleep in and nice enough to wear to work or a fancy dinner, and casual enough to picnic in the park or even do sports in. Costume jewelry tends to be inexpensive. It is usually bigger, clunkier and more statement type pieces. Costume jewelry is fun for lots of different occasions and can really add to an outfit. A few examples of each type of jewelry and when you would wear them are:
Special occasion:
If you have a wedding to go to you're likely to pull out your biggest and brightest diamonds. You may opt for the beautiful emerald broach your grandmother left for you, or the canary diamond necklace your husband bought for your thirtieth wedding anniversary. If it's a day event, like a graduation or Christening you might go for something more subtle but equally beautiful such as a ring or watch.
Everyday:
There are a number of jewelry artists who design the perfect pieces for everyday wear. For women's wear, Else Peretti is one of them. You might be familiar with her floating hearts or signature beans. These necklace pendants are small, graceful and suitable for all occasions. They are comfortable to sleep in as well, removing the need to ever take them off. For men, everyday jewelry would consist of a nice pair of silver or white gold cufflinks, or if suits your style, a chain with some sort of religious pendant.
Costume:
Costume jewelry is the kind of thing you would have picked up in a flea market. Better yet, it's the type of thing your mother might have picked up in a flea market in the seventies. For women, it's the big chunky cuffs, the long strings of beats and the outrageous head pieces. For men, it might be big, gothic rings or funky tie clips. Costume jewelry can and should of course be worn to costume parties but is also very suitable when looking to jazz up an outfit. If you're wearing a lot of solid colours for instance, you might splash out with an eccentric tie or head scarf, or perhaps a thick necklace.
Jewelry should be worn according to the occasion, the outfit and the mood. Happy accessorising.
