10 Excellent Ways To Save Money On Food

by Stuart Wood

Feeding a family can be a costly venture. There are a number of different things that can be done to reduce the cost associated with buying, preparing, and storing foods.

1. Menu Planning for the Week For the week, meals should be planned out. This includes meals away from home and the meals that are eaten together. By creating a menu for the entire week, a shopping list can be created and this will be easier to stick to once at the grocery store.

2. Stick to a Budget In addition to a menu plan, using a weekly budget will be of benefit. With creating a budget, the most important thing is to stay within it. If there is a meal plan, it will be rather easy to stay within the budget.

3. Reuse Those Bags At the grocery store, reusable bags should be used. These are not only environmentally friendly, but will save money at the checkout counter. Many grocery stores will offer discounts to the shopper for each cloth or reusable bag that they have.

4. Look at the Unit Cost When comparing items, the unit cost is the most important thing to look at. Many times, different brands will have the same item packaged in different sizes. By comparing the units cost, one can easily see what they are purchasing and how it compares to the same quantity of another product.

5. Wholesale Clubs Shopping at a wholesale club can often save a family a good amount of money. These stores are great for items that need to be purchased in bulk. One word of caution would be that the stores do not always have the best deals. Before making purchases, comparison shopping still should be done with the standard grocery store.

6. Generic When Possible For many items, it is more economical to purchase the house brand or generic equivalent. Many times, these items will be of the same quality as the higher-priced brand name products.

7. Coupon Clipping Coupons are one way that a family can save money on food. Coupons can be obtained in a number of different places such as newspapers and magazines. You can even find online websites offering Cashback and restaurant voucher codes.

8. Skip the Impulse Purchases When ready to pay for the groceries, the items in the checkout line should be avoided. These items are impulse purchases and if they are not on the shopping list, they do not need to be purchased.

9. Brown Bag It Whenever possible, meals should be prepared at home. When going to work or school, packing a brown bag lunch will save money and will allow better monitoring of the calories and type of food that is eaten.

10. Leftovers Once the meal is finished, use of leftovers is important. This includes properly storing the food to be eaten for later as well as utilizing items for additional meals. This would include using the chicken from dinner and making a stew out of it for later.

With these and other ideas, it is easy for a family to save money on their food purchases and improve their food habits.
