Exposed Cistern Series: Toilet Upgrades, Styles And Their Implications

by Babak Tavakoli

When considering a toilet suite upgrading project, it is possible to feel challenged by the number of issues that you need to take into consideration. This may be because you have never previously viewed this fixture to be that important once it was initially installed during your house construction.

However, the good thing is that a toilet upgrade is really only a process of replacing what you have already. During a toilet upgrade process, your plumber simply replaces what you currently have with a new modern toilet suite from the exposed cistern series without making any major pipe work modifications.

Before Buying A Replacement Toilet

There are a number of important things you should know prior to going to the home depot or showroom for your toilet replacement:

- You will need to know whether the water for the current toilet cistern is coming in from a higher level position or if it's from a low level one (inline or beneath your cistern). For example, if the water is from a low level, you will have to acquire a toilet suite that has a 'Bottom Inlet' position.

- Based on the water inlet position for the high level type, it may become necessary to discuss with your plumber on the possibility of shifting it to suit either a Bottom Inlet suite or Back Entry suite. The Back Entry suite format is the more modern of the two as it has no exposed piping.

- Confirm if the pan got a 'P' or an 'S' design. If your toilet pan outlet exits via the bathroom floor, what you got is an 'S' Trap pan, and if exiting through your wall, then you have a 'P' Trap pan.

- The final important thing you need to carry out is taking measurement from the bathroom wall or floor where your pan outlet exits, to the outlet centre on your toilet. This is what makes the 'set out' measurements.

If some of these aspects are too technical, get your plumber to advise you. He or she can also indicate the cost implications of your upgrade.

Types Of Toilet Suite Styles

Largely based on the set out measurements you have captured, you could select your toilet suite from 3 basic styles:

1. The Connector Suite

A connector or link toilet suite allows for the screwing of your cistern to the wall through a flush pipe that links your cistern with the toilet pan. Your pan may then be positioned further out from the bathroom wall using a plate that hides your flush pipe.

The style is beneficial due to its high flexible, especially if you don't want to change your basic bathroom design or flooring, but only desire an upgrade from the older the Connector suite.

2. Close Coupled Suite

This is where the toilet cistern is directly fixed on to your toilet pan. This style has the benefit of giving a more contemporary look. In a number of instances, it may not even require you to alter the bathroom floor as your toilet pan will covers the older "footprint".

3. The Wall Faced Suite

This is similar to the close coupled toilet suite except that the pan back sits flush with your bathroom wall concealing completely all the pipe work.
