The Superior Donuts Broadway Play Is A Well Written Comedy Hit!

by Al Terry

Superior Donuts debuted on Broadway on Oct 1, 2009 after preview performances that started on Sept 16, 2009. This production of Steppenwolf Theatre Company is being performed on Broadway at Music Box Theatre of the Shubert Organization. The play about a decrepit donut shop in a seedy area of Chicago is written by Tracy Letts. Letts received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for the Best Play in 2008 for his play - August: Osage County.

Superior Donuts has two main characters: a coffee and donut shop owner and his African American employee. The owner Arthur Pryzybyszewski is played by Michael McKean and Jon Michael Hill portrays Franco Wicks, the employee. The play, which has seven other performers is directed by Tina Landau.

The Story

The story revolves around the friendship between Pryzybyszewski, the ex-hippie shop owner and Wicks, the employee, who wants to improve the shop. The shop is very shabby and Pryzybyszewski is not bothered about making changes in it. Wicks, who manages to get hired, presents a number of ideas to help upgrade the shop.

There are seven other characters in Superior Donuts which include a female cop who is more interested in Wicks in a personal way, than in the case she comes to investigate. Then there is a Russian owner of the next door DVD shop who is only interested in expanding his business.

The comedy is well written, directed, and performed by all its cast members.
