Building Sustainable Waste Disposal

by Badeth Abonita

Garbage is the product of modernity and continues to be the culprit of uncontrollable outbreak of diseases and environmental degradation. Through the years, the increasing volume of garbage has remained an unresolved problem while the means of dealing with trash wobbles as garbage control must be dealt within a responsible fashion.

Twenty six percent of garbage that goes to landfills are paper products, 18 percent food scraps, 16 percent plastic, and seven percent yard waste, metals and wood. Every year, the United States reaches the peak of 230 million tons of garbage that is equivalent to 4.6 pounds per person each day. Men are the source of garbage, thus, it is everybody’s responsibility to pursue his goal of reducing waste and conserving his resources. To be able to make a difference through addressing garbage crisis, an individual’s efforts towards sustainable waste disposal and control is necessary.

One of the most effective yet overlooked practices in waste reduction is composting. This is the method of transforming organic waste into valuable resources; it is very crucial since landfills are drastically becoming scarce and expensive. Technically speaking, composting yard and food waste would reduce the waste streams to about one fourth while improving fertility of the soil and preventing erosion.

It takes patience and dedication to succeed in waste reduction. Composting on one’s own yard or the use of sustainable products such as the bin system is a good start. Everyone can contribute to composting in the comforts of his home. It’s satisfying to see how food scraps turn into natural fertilizer. Even if the only space in your place available for composting is your patio or balcony, imagine how you can help save the earth by piling food waste inside a composter from USA and roll out bins.

Indoor composting has improved as compost bins are designed to speed up the decomposition process. In your house, there are plenty of kitchen wastes to dispose—egg shells, fruit peelings and vegetable scraps. The presence of indoor composters doesn’t just help you get rid of trash quickly and efficiently but also helps reduce junk in landfills. Also, when fall starts and the leaves in your yard or neighborhood become a yard waste, composters play a vital role.

The availability of various composting resources has evidently renewed the interest in garbage disposal. Aside from plastic bins, home gardeners are constantly inventing creative and inexpensive materials to hold their compost - for example, bins made from wire mesh or pallets in Canada or pallets from Mexico. Pallets can be purchased from local plastic dealers or plastic pallets suppliers, and these come in different sizes and shapes.
