Believe it or not, the GI tract has a lot to do with your weight. It is the place where digestion occurs, and thus becomes the first place where the body responds to the foods that are put into the mouth.

Food should be broken down in the mouth, by the process of chewing. If it is not properly chewed, digestion can be impaired, which may result in gastrointestinal inflammation, called something like Chron's Disease, or Diverticular Disease. Here food is also mixed with saliva, which acts as both a lubricant, and an enzyme.

The stomach mixes the food with a strong acid and more enzymes to break down proteins.

Next, the food enters the small intestine, where it is mixed with a fluid from the pancreas containing bicarbonate, to neutralize the acid, and more enzymes to break down food. Research show that this fluid is not released when antacids are used. This results is the residual stomach acids burning the GI walls, creating more inflammation, and malabsorbtion.

There is a bacterial coating of the GI tract called the flora. The flora actually does the bulk of the digestive process. When it is healthy, the digestion is good, when it is not - more inflammation.

The colon mostly resorbs water. It also absorbs some vitamins. Low fiber content causes excessive pressures here, causing guess what - more inflammation.

There is a common factor in GI problems, and that is inflammation. We notice pain, but that is a result of the inflammation. GI inflammation, especially when it is chronic, can cause what is called a Leaky Bowel Syndrome. This is where incompletely digested foods are absorbed into the blood stream.

Leaky bowel syndrome can cause a host of major health problems. It will cause inflammation throughout the body at the least. It may overload the body with "foreign" substances, called toxins. It can also cause the immune response to attack where the improperly digested foods in the body are. If they happen to be inside cells, the cells may get attacked. This is called autoimmune response.

So what does this have to do with weight? The body cannot properly manage the foods that are given to it when it is in a state of inflammation, or immune hypersensitivity, or in a state of being toxic. In all of these cases, the body will shut down and "store" all of its foods. It is in a survival mode, keeping everything that it sees within.
