The CompTIA is the Computer Technology Industry Association. They are one of the leading providers of information technology certifications. Their certifications are accredited by the American National Standards Institute. The comptia certification is valid for three years. Upon expiration certificate holders will need to renew.

Certifications

Security+

The Security+ certificate designates competency in the field of computer security.

There is currently a demanding need for Security+ professionals due to the growing number of businesses using electronic methods and in need of high security. The Security+ certificate includes such topics as access control, risk management, cryptography, security threats, network security, identity management and more.

A+ Certification

The A+ Certification is one of the more common CompTIA certificates, and trains students for proficiency as a computer technician. IT professionals who have at least 500 hours of hands on experience are intended for the exam, which covers computer repair and installation, network cards, CPU and power supplies, memory, and historical operating systems among other things.

The certification is neutral, meaning it covers operating systems and technology from various vendors such as Apple Inc., Microsoft, and Linux. In order to receive certification the pupil must pass two tests, the CompTIA A+ Essentials and the CompTIA A+ Practical Application.

CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP)

This comptia certification is meant as a follow up to the CompTIA Security+ certificate. It certifies that technical knowledge as well as the skills to conceptualize, design and engineer secure solutions in a variety of complex environments. Ideal candidates are those who have a minimum ten years experience in IT admin, plus five years of hands on security experience.

Server+ certifies the candidate to be proficient in operating systems and server-specific hardware. This includes areas in the following: SCSI, RAID, and CPU's, disaster recovery, and proficiency in server management.

Linux+

The Linux+ certification proves competency in the field of Linux operating systems. This ranges from installation to knowledge in their open source licensing. The exam covers several areas: installation, management, documentation, security, configuration, and hardware. This exam is best taken by IT professionals who have had six months to a year of experience with Linux. Some of the topics on the Linux+ exam include boot loader configurations, using the command line, security, network administration, and mounting file systems.

CTP+

The comptia certification called CTP+ stands for Convergence Technologies Professional. It is a vendor neutral exam that proves competency in core skills and knowledge that IT professionals need in order to sell convergent technologies. Candidates should be certified in Network+, although it is not recommended, before taking this test, as well as a year of experience in areas such as telephony, data networking, and other convergent related technology. The exam covers such requirements as voice and multimedia applications, problem analysis, problem resolution, management of data components and other convergent related topics.

Some other common tests given by CompTIA are Cloud Essentials (Cloud computing from a technical and or business perspective), Storage+ (archive and restoration technology), PDI + (printing and document imaging) and Project+ (knowledge in managing projects).
