Forget About Weddings Rings, Matching Tattoos Are All That

by Alexander Schmitt

Back in the days, when a couple wanted to show how much they meant to each other, they gave each other a friendship bracelet, a necklace with half hearts or wedding rings. But of course those could easily get lost or damaged. Tattoos on the other hand are for life. That's why some couple chose matching tattoos as a proof of their love for each other. Celebrities have already embraced this new trend, but apparently this kind of "eternal" proof doesn't prove to be a guarantee for a successful relationship: Katy Perry and Russell Brand had "Anuugaccati Prahava" tattooed on their body shortly after getting engaged in 2010. This means "Go with the flow", but unfortunately their relationship was ended in 2011 already.

When Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton were having a relationship, they had each other's face and name tattooed. Angelina had Billy Bob's face tattooed on her left shoulder, Billy Bob had Angelina's name tattooed on his right leg. Since their separation Billy Bob's face got replaced by the dates of birth of her children and Billy Bob showed his creativity by reforming Angelina's name to an angel.

"Normal" couples (as in: not celebrities) usually choose less dramatic tattoos, such as matching symbols (f.ex. pieces of a puzzle), half drawings or quotes that can be read apart and together (f.ex.

"Every day together… and… for the rest of our lives").

On the Buzznet website you'll find a picture of a couple that chose this phrase: "Every saint has a history" and "Every sinner has a future". A lesbian couple had a funny doodle tattooed on their body and two nerds opted for a little Pac-man.

Why do people do these things? For several reasons, but mainly for keeping nice memories, as a symbol of their love or just because they thought it would be funny.

25-year-old model Bruce Raubenheimer - New York says: "With us, it all started as a joke. But a few weeks later we decided to actually go through with it, since we genuinely loved each other and the tattoo really symbolized our love. We got the idea together and it was a funny story to tell to new people we met. Just by looking at the tattoo, we remind ourselves of the happy moments of our lives".

But what if the relationship is not that strong and it all ends? Bruce isn't together with his partner, anymore, yet he doesn't regret his tattoo. "It's just a very funny story that will always be a part of my life and of course my ex and I will always be connected in one way or another. Everybody has a past and I'm sure glad to have spent a part of my life with her".
