Sleeping Beauty
There are two things you have to know about me: I’m a sucker for sleep and I hate bright, sunshiny mornings.
If there’s one thing I cannot stand it would be sunlight. It’s quite a shocker, even to me – having been born and raised in sunny California where people soak in the heat of the raging sun like dear life depended on it. It was in middle school that I practically dragged the entire family out of sunny-land and move to Washington where nary a ray of golden light could seep through the thick blanket of clouds.
Vampire – people’s first impression of me. It’s most probably my pale complexion as I bathe myself with SPF 70 sun block. Well either that or the mad mushrooming of young adult books about numinous bloodsuckers make people question my mortality. Had I been a vampire, I wouldn’t be able to sleep unperturbed for three whole days – by far the longest I’ve gone out cold. Maybe they can call me sleeping beauty instead of vampire and I wouldn’t mind at all. I’m able to sleep through loud noise and even disrupting movement but never ever through bright light or immense heat.
Up to this day I wonder how I managed to live to tell the tale of my life in the State of sand, beach and surf. I have but a slight recall of my childhood, spent mostly indoors nonetheless. My room had custom-built wood shades and blinds – nothing but the thickest, most heat and light absorbent shutters in Southern California. I was the number one fan of California Shutter, this manufacturing company that provides wood blinds in CA that block out even the harshest summer light. To think of it, maybe I slept through most of my younger years.
The best day for me would be waking up not knowing what time it is. It’s like being in a bubble, albeit thickly covered by wood shutters California shutters and not the usual flimsy, see-through type. There was a time when I was down for the count that my family had to leave me behind to go on a trip out of town. I lived ala Kevin McCallister in Home Alone for about a week just because no one could get me to budge. Mom fondly calls me Grease or Oil because I can stay still and undisturbed for long. My brothers would say that I wouldn’t even know if the house was on fire once I’ve crawled under the comfy duvet.
I consider it a gift to be able to get as much as 96 hours and as little as 12 hours of sleep. I pity those with insomnia who fuss over sleeping pills, psycho-therapy, what-have-you just so they could get some shut-eye.
