Wide World of Networking

by Adrian Griffiths

To give your business the cutting edge, you need to step into the wide world of networking. Computer networks are a great way to make sure all the separate units in your enterprise operates as one cohesive force, keeping in close touch, sharing knowledge and information to keep ahead of competition. While this is just a matter of linking up all the computers in a building if you have a single office, you need wide area networking (WAN) if you have offices scattered across a large geographical area.

Computers on a WAN are connected through communication carriers like the telephone system, leased lines or via satellite. Wide area networking is a low-cost means to bridge the distance between cities within the same country or even between nations or continents. This allows a central office to be in constant touch with its branch offices, or client firms and service providing companies to communicate with each other. The WAN ensures that any employee of a company can access and transmit secure data at high speeds through the network from any of the firm’s offices.

Incidentally, the largest WAN in the world today is the World Wide Web (WWW), which allows anyone access from any location around the globe.

For help in setting up a WAN, you would need to contact a network solutions provider. What will follow is meticulous planning. You have to assess your requirements because that would determine what mode of data transfer you would need to put in place. The first option is frame relay, a data communications service that is especially helpful in interconnecting local area networks (LANs). But if you need faster transmission you could turn to digital asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) that is becoming increasingly popular. You would also need to make decisions about switches and routers. A switch allows various nodes (computers) on a LAN to communicate with each other and several users to transfer information over the network simultaneously. A router enables communication between networks.
