Here's How to Pick a Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour from Las Vegas

by Lea Fallon

There's two types of Grand Canyon helicopter excursions: Basic and deluxe. This article explains the main difference and helps you select the one that's right for you.

The departure point for most basic helicopter tours is an airfield in Boulder City, Nevada. Deluxe trips depart right from the Vegas Strip. Each standard tour includes hotel pick up and drop off via a van. The deluxe tours offer transportation in a limo, which is an exciting experience. Which one would you prefer if you're celebrating a special occasion? The limo, for sure.

Further, tours that are deluxe come with the superior EcoStar 130 helicopter. Basic tours traditionally use Bell Rangers. With its 180-degree wraparound windshield and forward-facing, stadium-type seating, the EcoStar is designed for sightseeing. Plus, its aerodynamic design means your flight will be smoother and quieter.

Types Of Deluxe Helicopter Tours

Several deluxe tours on Grand Canyon helicopters are available, and they're all very popular. For instance, you may enjoy the tour that flies down to the canyon floor where you get out and enjoy a Champagne picnic. All Grand Canyon helicopters out of Vegas fly over Hoover Dam and Lake Mead en route to the Canyon, but on the way back home, this one also flies over the Strip.

You can even upgrade this particular flight to a beautiful sunset departure. These sunset tours are very popular because of the way the colors in the canyon change along with the setting sun. It's also amazing to see Sin City's millions of lights at and after sunset.

There's a deluxe air-only flight too. Instead of landing it circles the West Rim, covering all the main highlights. It even hovers over the Strip before setting down in Vegas. These Grand Canyon tours are ideal if you really want to see the canyon, but you don't have much time to spend.

Another fun deluxe tour is the one known as the "3-in-1" tour. It gives you the most comprehensive experience possible. It begins with a helicopter descent to the canyon floor where you get out and hop on a raft so you can tour the Colorado River. It also lands at the top of the Rim and gives you 2 1/2 hours there to explore. There are free shuttles available to take you to landmarks such as Guano Point, the Hualapai Ranch, the Indian Cultural Center, and Eagle Point. You can also try the glass Skywalk if you are brave.

Since its construction, the Glass Bridge has quickly become the West Rim's most popular attraction. It's a cantilevered all-glass bridge that lets you strut some 70 feet over the rim until you are suspended some 4K feet over the bottom. The views are unbelievable.

On the fun 3-in-1 tour, you can see the Grand Canyon from top to bottom. It is a fun trip you should try to take if you can.

Summing Up

You might be able to tell that I prefer the deluxe Grand Canyon helicopter tours over the basic version. Riding in a limo is a lot of fun, plus it eliminates the 30 minute shuttle ride to Boulder City, but not only that, the view of Vegas as you return is a spectacular sight, especially after sunset. I truly believe the deluxe flights are the best way to see the Canyon in all its glory.
