Martial Arts Fans Should Know About These Amazing Karate Weapons

by Andrew Bui

"Any hardcore fan of the great kung fu movie classics could easily tell you what most of the different karate weapons are. It doesn't take an expert to name a lot of the various weapons that have been used in the movie business, but there are some weapons that are so rare that it would take a knowledgeable master of martial arts to identify.

Of course, the single weapon that no one should have a problem recognizing is the notorious ninja sword, also known as the Japanese katana. You've likely seen an old movie about samurai warriors heading into battle and slaying each other with their mighty katana, and you've probably seen a modern ninja film where a stealthy assassin strikes down their foes with the sword as well. They have curved single-edged blades and handles that are long enough for a two-handed grip and heavy enough to provide a proper balance for the steel blade.

The Bo staff is another very common weapon used in martial arts, and though it wouldn't have been very much use for a Samurai on a battlefield, in the hands of a proficient master it could be a brutal and deadly piece of equipment. There are a (number of different variations of the staff, but they are mostly long shafts of wood, much like a broomstick.|Most staffs are simply lengthy poles of really hard wood, but there are a handful of different types available.} They are held by their middle sections so that there is a perfect balance of weight on both sides of the user's hands, allowing the user to pivot the weapon effortlessly to fling one end or the other in whatever direction necessary.

One of the more unique weapons that you see much of in kung fu movies is the nun chucks, and many kung fu fanatics enjoy keeping a pair of their own. The neat thing about the nun chucks is how incredibly fast they are and the way they seem to go in several directions at once, but that also makes it easy to injure yourself while practicing your technique. Nun chucks are rather easy to spot because of how different they look from every other type of weapon, and they are really just two thick sticks that are tethered at one end.

Even if you are a giant fan of kung fu, you still may never have seen anything quite like a three-section staff or a Sai. These are not seen as often as those listed above because they are less effective and sometimes a lot more difficult to master, but they are still among the best martial arts takedown tools out there.
