Ideas for Diaper Cakes

by Dawn M Hall

Diaper cakes are popular gifts for expectant parents. They are also fun to use as centerpieces as baby showers. Made from diapers, toys, and other goodies, they are not only fun to give, but practical too.

Whether you buy one or make your own, be sure to coordinate it with the theme of the baby shower or the nursery, and in addition to the diapers, load it down with other presents that the parents of the new baby will appreciate, including bottles, rattles, pacifiers, booties, baby shampoo and powder, bibs, and other goodies.

Here are a few good ideas for diaper cakes:

Popular book, movie, and television characters - Many parents decide to decorate their nursery using characters from books and movies. Winnie the Pooh, Elmo and the rest of the Sesame Street gang, and Peter Rabbit of the Beatrix Potter story books are all good examples. Instead of ribbon, use receiving blankets in the chose theme, to wrap around the tiers of the cake. In addition, embellish using coordinating baby goods, such as rattles and toys.

Ideas for baby boys - Western cowboy themes, choo choo trains, and sports are popular cake ideas for little boys. For cowboy, top off the top with a small cowboy hat or pair of toddler sized cowboy books. A train diaper cake can be topped with a wooden toy train, such as Thomas the Tank or Brio trains. Even though the little guy won't be able to play with them right away, these toy trains can be used to decorate his nursery until he's old enough to roll them around. Another good option are sports themes. Soccer, basketball, and football cakes are good for an all purpose sports theme, or you can create a cake based around a popular team, such as the New Orleans Saints or the Chicago Cubs.

Ideas for baby girls - Fun diaper cakes for little girls include butterfly, ladybug and princess cakes. By using silk butterflies or creating your own from craft materials you already own, it's easy to embellish butterfly cakes. Ladybug concoctions are fun to put together, in bold shades of red and green or pastel hues of pink and pale green. If you can't find any ladybug toys to decorate the cake, hunt down stickers and die cuts at your local scrapbooking store to be used as embellishments.

If the parents do not know if they are having a baby boy or girl, gender neutral themes such as stuffed bears, rubber duckies, and ocean or jungle themes are good choices. Let's take teddy bears, for example. Top off this style of cake by placing a stuffed animal on the top tier. However, you could also create a tricycle cake, and have the stuffed bear placed on the seat.

Color schemes - Instead of doing a theme, many parents are now basing their nursery around a color scheme. For example, the pink and brown combo is a popular choice for little girls, and blue and brown are popular for boys. Find ribbon in coordinating colors to wrap around the cake tiers, and use an oversized bow or flower to top off the cake. In order to maintain a sophisticated, elegant look to the cake, presents can be hidden away inside the tiers, a fun surprise for parents to find when they disassemble it.
