How to Defeat the Holiday Blues

by Amy C.

The holiday season is the season for sentimentality. Many people find themselves, reminiscing the past or craving for the life they have lived before. The holidays is all about spending time with your loved ones or lighting candle lanterns with your friends. But if these people are not there with you, you will naturally feel the holiday blues kicking in.

For people who have no choice but to work during the holidays or those who have chosen to spend this holiday season alone, here are the things that you can do to defeat the holiday blues:

1. Contact your loved ones.

Even though you can't physically be with your loved ones, you can always communicate with them. Thankfully, there are a variety of ways for you to communicate now. You can schedule for a chat or video call. Talk to a friend you haven't talked to for the longest time and bridge the distance or the time that separates you.

2. Spend time with happy and cheerful people.

Do not let yourself be alone this time. If there are people like you who is spending the holidays alone, invite them over for dinner or try organizing a small party together. They say that misery loves company. You can decorate the house, add feng shui fountains for ambiance, and keep each other company to kick the blues away.

3. Watch a funny movie.

Rent comedy or romantic flicks and have a DVD marathon alone or with someone close to you. Immerse yourself in another world and in someone else's life so you can momentarily forget about your woes.

4. Celebrate the real essence of the holiday season.

Peel away the superficial layers of the holiday season to reveal what this season is all about. It is all about giving and all about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Focus your attention on the good spirit that this season brings. This season also evokes hope.

5. Try making a holiday project.

There is no time for the blues to kick in if you are busy doing relevant stuff this holiday season. Why not organize a garage sale and then give the proceeds to a charity institution? You can also try volunteering for charity work this holiday. Knowing that you have helped lessen the load of other people can already bring happiness and peace in your life.

The holiday season does not have to bring you down. Just try to be creative in finding ways to be merry.
