How can you reduce the risk of a shark attack?

What could you do to make a difference?

by Sylvie Leochko

As the amount of shark attack victims is rising nowadays, the need to take preventive measures is a must. While over the years various safety tips were given to people, some were based on facts but others were not.

Here are some of the preventive measures recommended to divers, surfers and swimmers. For starters, contrary to some beliefs, you should always swim in groups and close to shore as sharks tend to attack lonely preys which are far away from the sure. Being closer to the shore also permits you to get assistance and medical help sooner. Since every second counts, time is of the essence, and so is the distance.

The second tip is to avoid swimming at dusk, dawn or during the night as these times represent the most active ones, especially for feeding purposes. Another tip is the fact that you should stay out of the water if you are bleeding from an open wound or if a woman has her period as sharks have a supersensitive olfactory sense.

If you wear jewelry, you should remove it as its shiny aspect resembles the scales of a fish which can attract and confuse sharks seeing you as a potential prey. You should also avoid swimming in an area busy with fishing or diving seabirds as it is a sign that there are baits and therefore some feeding activity going on, including the presence of sharks.

Keep in mind that the presence of porpoises does not mean that sharks are absent of that area. In fact, both porpoises and sharks tend to have the same eating habits. Also avoid either swimming in murky waters, displaying an uneven tan or wearing bright clothing as sharks can see contrasts extremely well.

Excessive splashing and erratic movements related to the swimming of pets attract sharks and should be avoided at all costs. Stay away from steep drop-offs and refrain from swimming between sandbars as these represent popular hangouts for sharks.

Finally, keep out or leave the water if sharks are known to be in the area or if either you see one or one is spotted while you are in the water. And of course, never harass a shark if you see one.

Now that you are aware of these useful preventive measures against potential shark attacks, I strongly suggest that you use them at all times. After all, sharks are part of nature and every time that we enter their territory, we should respect them on a regular basis. One way to do while avoiding shark attacks is to avoid confusing them by letting them see us as a potential prey. You see, most shark attacks are actually unprovoked and therefore can be easily avoided by using these important tips. Don’t become one of the tragic statistics, be safe!
