In Enchanted April

by Robert Truog

In Enchanted April. "To those who appreciate wisteria and sunshine. Small medi-eval Italian castle on the shores of the Mediterranean to be let furnished for the month of April. Servants remain. Write Box Z 1045 E.C.A., 'The Times.' "

This small, intriguing ad incites Lottie Wilkins to gasp for the air she so desperately needs by escaping, for a time, London and the suffocating routine of her life. She rounds up three other women, essentially strangers, to share the expenses and the possibility of magic inherent in the simple ad.

Enchanted April, a BBC Theatrical Films Production, is an honest, charming, and gently humorous look at the human heart. Divinely unfettered by self-consciousness, it unapologetically goes for the genuinely sweet.

Enchanted April represents the best of what film can be. Unfortunately, its world of tenderness and vulnerability appears so little in life and film. Most of the time, we come to meet life on its terms. Here it comes to meet us, on ours. Its sweetness is very nourishing.

Shot on location at the castle where Elizabeth von Arnin wrote the original novel in 1922, Enchanted April is exqui-sitely beautiful, sometimes startlingly so, as when Lottie opens her windows onto the Mediterranean on that first morning and we see Rose surrounded by a exotic outburst of flowers.

The film has many poignant moments, delicately and subtly expressed by a very talented cast. Hopefully, this film will make its way to a theater near you, but if not, it's worth seeking out when traveling, or renting or purchasing when available on video.

n Sneakers is a high-tech computer spy adventure told on a human scale. Robert Redford, Ben Kingsley, Sidney Poitier, and Dan Ackroyd star as a team of reformed ex-criminals whose company consults with banks and other august institutions to help them become impenetrable. When a mathematical genius develops a code-breaker that can crack open any computer system—power, communication, air-traffic control, etc., the team is swept into an intrigue with potentially fatal implications. Once the consulting team finds the code-breaker, it is impossible to tell who is friend and who foe and to whom they should deliver the code-breaker. An action-adventure film that works, Sneakers integrates human foibles and candid humor while, for the most part, staying away from that nasty "v" word. (Sorry, all you Attilas.) A box office hit.

n Wind. Zzzzzz, sorry, zzzzz, oops! For those who love sailing—otherwise, zzzz.

n Note: Many readers have asked me to warn them about films that should be avoided at all costs. I have resisted this, wanting to put my attention on the positive, but Whispers in the Dark convinced me otherwise. If it's not too late, avoid this film. Send in no money.
