The Pleasures of Being Outdoors

by Tamara Jacobs

There is a calm that comes from being outdoors. It almost doesn't matter whether you're walking, working or relaxing, being outside and letting the fresh air hit your skin can wake you up and make you feel alive and healthy again. Some prime examples of this are:

1. When you're feeling ill:

Have you ever woken up with a stuffed nose and aches in your bones? You look outside at a cold spring day and think 'oh no, I don't want to go out there.' But staying in bed sometimes can feel like lying in your own sickness. Getting dressed and going for a brisk walk outside however, clears your head, puts a little chill on your hot skin, and if only for a few minutes, clears your sinuses and makes you feel better.

2. When you want to read or write:

Home tends to be the most comfortable place to spend a Sunday afternoon with your book. Seems a real shame though, to stay indoors on a beautiful afternoon, which is why having outdoor furniture is ideal. With a table, a chair, and some sort of head covering, you can take full advantage of the weather while reading, writing, dining and resting outside.

3. When you want to clear your head:

Going for a long walk, with good music in your ears and lots of visual stimulation around you is a great way to get some exercise, enjoy a nice day and clear your head. If walking aimlessly isn't your cup of tea, than maybe plan to go somewhere quite far and walk there.

4. When you want some colour on your skin:

Tanning might seem like a vain activity, but it is the very thing most of us need when it's been many months since summer has ended and when there's still quite a few before it will arrive again. Laying out by a pool or on the beach and getting some sun will bronze your skin and make you feel beautiful again. Be careful though, too much sun is a bad thing. Make sure you're equipped with some sort of canopy, lots of water and sunscreen.

5. When you're gathering people:

Instead of entertaining guests inside your house or inviting them to a club, why not treat them to an outdoor event? You can host a summer garden party with barbeque and drinks, or invite them to an outdoor theatrical performance. Just make sure that you're prepared should it rain.

As long as you're equipped, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to take full advantage of the nice weather and do as much as you possibly can outdoors.
