Choose Your Cognitive Therapist Wisely

There are many therapists out there but some do not have successful curriculum

by Larry Lloyd

The problem with cognitive therapy is the actual Therapy part. When a person requires cognitive therapy, how can you be certain that the therapist and the program he/she uses will have the ability to modify thinking errors and self-defeating conduct? There are a plethora of therapists out there each with their own interpretations and curriculum. Very few if any, are evidence based with confirmation that what they use is correct and valuable.

Virtually every counseling program can state that it is cognitive therapy, yet few, if any, can ascertain that it works. One might submit that cognitive therapy is a misnomer. The meaning of "therapy" is the treatment of illness or disability. Employing cognitive therapy in mental illness is almost completely unsuccessful because you cant use cognitive restructuring training on an individual who is not cognitive. The same holds true to children. Cognitive therapy is unsuccessful on children for the same reason: they are not cognitive thus far.

The challenge with having therapists assist in cognitive therapy programs is that many therapists have emotional illnesses themselves and many live in self-deception. That is, they do not understand that they're ill and consequently they pass on their sickness (untruths) to their clients. A plethora of individuals go to psycho therapists sessions for a long time at a vast price, yet never get better, in fact, a lot get worse. Yet experienced cognitive life skills counselors who have good proof based curriculum can aid individuals in making lasting changes in only hours instead of days, months and years. This is not to imply that every therapist is unsuccessful. The most successful counselors/therapists have a positive way of being. Individuals respond because of truth, not counseling procedures. The truth resonates at a frequency that can cut the veil of self-imposed falsehoods and help people remove years of bad programing. Think cognitive restructuring life skills VS a clinical method of cognitive therapy. Look for fact based cognitive restructuring programs that will supply proof that their technique works. Look for writers and organizations that have years of experience in making and assisting groups. There isn't a book out there that can replace real hands-on experience.
