Many reptile keepers have found breeding crickets to be surprisingly easy. The basics are explained on many web sites. In this article I will discuss food for crickets. \par \par A lot of the information out there about breeding crickets recommends feeding them simple grains such as chicken mash or rabbit pellets. These are very easy to come by and they keep well. You want to remember that the better the food you provide for your crickets the healthier your reptiles will be. This includes essential vitamins and minerals. A easy rule of thumb is to provide variety. The wider the variety of food items you provide your crickets the better chance of them receiving many vitamins.\par \par A simple and inexpensive solution I came up with a few years ago was to plant a variety of vegetables in my garden. I grow collard greens, mustard greens, carrots, cabbage, bib lettuce, potatoes, radish, spinach, and dandelions. This may sound like it is expensive.But it isn't since these vegetables are only for crickets and not for my consumption. I don't spend any time trying to kill pests or weeding around the vegetables. I also let the vegetables to seed every year saving money on replanting. \par \par My base diet consists of inexpensive dog or cat food. I place the dry food in a shallow dish on the top of the egg crates. I make sure the dish is always full. If the crickets don't have access to protein there is a risk of them eating their young. On top of this I provide the vegetables I discussed earlier.\par \par In review, when feeding crickets there are a few main things to consider. Make sure there is always protein available (dry dog or cat food ). Provide a variety of vegetables. You will have to be very careful with store bought vegetables because of the high amount of pesticides that will kill your cricket colony.\par }
