Different Kinds Of Paint Sprayers

by Mick Trueman

Paint sprayers can change a difficult and time-consuming project into one that is enjoyable, quick and professional-looking. For large paint jobs like the exterior of a house, doors, decks and outdoor furniture, nothing else works as well. With just a push on its trigger, a sprayer starts delivering a fine mist of paint.

It is more convenient to paint with a sprayer instead of a brush or a roller. It can save time and back-breaking effort for home owners. Airless spraying is about four times as fast as a brush and about two times faster than a roller.

Sprayers are available in sizes that are best for kinds of jobs and coatings, so it is important to find the one that is right for the job. Most sprayers for so-it-yourself projects as well as professional jobs are airless. Air sprayers are usually reserved for certain kinds of industrial finishes.

A choice of three basic types of pumps and many kinds of nozzle tips help the novice painter succeed like a pro. The pump types include the diaphragm, the piston pump and the double stroke piston.

Diaphragm pump

The diaphragm pump is the choice of the average user of latex paint. It is the most popular kind of sprayer for the home owner at the entry level. Some models can pump from a one or five gallon bucket, making possible a continuous flow of latex, stain, lacquer or other thin liquid. The pump assembly is reliable and usually trouble-free, and it delivers a smooth finish that is entirely satisfactory.

A new user has to understand that the convenience of using a sprayer is somewhat balanced by the time needed to clean up the equipment. Clean up that occurs quickly makes the process more successful and less difficult.

Piston pump

A piston pump can spray coatings that are the most often used, but it can also deliver thicker liquids .A home owner who wants a higher-end sprayer for do-it-yourself jobs may choose a piston pump model. It can deliver contractor quality work in a tool that is designed for a home owner. Many painting contractors choose them, and professional handymen who include painting among offered services also find them very serviceable. An advantage of the piston pump is its ability to move materials that others cannot handle, like epoxies or block fillers.

Double stroke piston

These high-end units are for use by the specialized professional painter or a home owner who is a serious do-it-yourself person. Some models can spray half a gallon in a minute, far exceeding the needs of most novice painters. It is not often chosen by home owners for jobs around the house.

Nozzle tips

The size of the opening in a tip, the orifice, needs to accommodate the kind of material that passes through it. A general rule for successful use of airless sprayers is to use the smaller orifices for thin coatings like lacquers and stains, and even smaller ones for high gloss latex paint. A typical distance for spraying is usually about 12 inches for best results.
