Nail Fungus Care Tips

by Chris Nowheet

Fungus is a living organism that lives in damp environments like under and around the nail. Affected nails are usually yellowish or brownish in color. They may thicken and later on become brittle. Other names for nail fungus are Onychomycosis and Tinea Unguium.

Nail fungus are commonly picked up in warm and moist places such as spas, swimming pools, shower rooms, and locker rooms. It is recommended to always wear sandals, slippers or shoes as they protect your feet from getting infected. Wear cotton or wool made socks because they provide good ventilation and absorb the sweat from your feet.

Choose shoes that promote continuous flow of air. You may also sprinkle anti-fungal products into your shoes. Applying a nail polish contributes to the growth and development of this infection. While the fungus is sealed deep down the nail, the darkness and warmness underneath allows it to grow and spread.

The best nail fungus care is prevention. Exercise proper hygiene and make sure your fingernails and toenails are clean and dry. This prevents bacteria from penetrating the nail. Always wear shoes or slippers in public facilities. Cut your nails straight across so that it will not extend beyond its tip. Avoid wearing tight hosiery as it makes your feet wet with moisture. Do not dig out ingrown nails especially if they are already contaminated. If you notice any irregularities on your nails, see a doctor immediately. Change in color, pain or swelling can be signs of a more serious problem. Sterilize manicure and pedicure instruments and do not apply polish to infected nails.
