Stop Aging

by Dr Jill Ammon-Wexler

Imagine rewinding the clock 10 or 20 years. How would you feel? Many researcher are looking for ways to make the years past 50 far more productive and healthy.

The Mind-Set Issue.

For example -- subjects in a Harvard University research project acted and felt two decades younger.

Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer retrofitted an isolated old New England hotel so that every visible sign said it was 20 years earlier. She then brought a group of men in their late 70s and early 80s into the environment. The men were told not to reminisce about the past, and to act as if they had traveled back in time.

Langer's findings were stunning: After just one week the men had more joint flexibility, increased dexterity and less arthritis in their hands. But nothing had changed except for the new environment they found themselves in.

Their mental acuity, gait and posture also improved. When outsiders were shown photographs taken of the men taken during the experiment, they judged them to be significantly younger than their actual age. It seemed as though the aging process had been reversed.

Langer's theory, detailed in her book, Counterclockwise, is that we are all victims of our own mental stereotypes about aging and health. She says we tend to mindlessly accept negative cultural cues about disease and old age, and that these cues then shape our self-concepts and behavior.

Mind-Set and Vision.

In another study Langer turned an ordinary optometrist eye chart upside down with the lines of smaller letters at the top. She had her subjects read from the smallest lines down. They still could not read the tiniest letters, but were able to read smaller letters than they could normally. It seems that their mindset actually improved their vision.

What About the Brain?

Psychologist and brain/mind researcher Dr. Jill Ammon-Wexler views aging from the standpoint of what's happening in our physical brains. Ammon-Wexler feels there is far more to healthy longevity than exercise, attitudes and a healthy diet.

She feels there are two additional goals: Maintain our mental agility, and boost our human growth hormone (HgH) production. Your mental agility can be stimulated by participating in serious conversation and even by doing crossword puzzles.

But HGH is a different issue. HGH -- human growth hormone -- is naturally produced by our brain, but production tapers off as we pass age 30. Decreased HGH leads to skin aging, weakened bones, lessened sexual performance, and a less reliable immune system.

HGH is a product of the pituitary gland, the master gland of the body. The goal is to keep your HGH at an optimum level as you age so you can retain youthfulness as late into life as possible.

HGH has spawned a multi-billion dollar industry. The most common way to correct an HGH deficiency is by injection. But such injections are highly controversial. Some physicians view it as a fountain of youth, while others are less convinced.

HGH Boost Alternatives.

However there are also ways to naturally boost your HGH without expensive injections: (1) Exercise, and especially strength training; (2) Fenugreek, a vegetable popular in Asia, both stimulates the release of growth hormone and boosts energy levels. Fenugreek herbs can be enjoyed as a tea; (3) L-Arginine, an amino acid, stimulates the release of HGH. Take in supplement form -- 2 grams, three times a day; (4) Listening to brainwave training audios focused in 1.05 cps Delta. This stimulates your brain to release natural HGH -- encouraging stronger joints and bones, better skin, more energy, and less risk for certain diseases.
