IT Training - What It Consists Of
Introduction
IT, or information technology, is one of the most important elements of modern society and it is virtually impossible to imagine how such a society could exist without it. Our ability to store and retrieve the information that we needed would be severely restricted, as would be our ability to do research for a college paper or other project. The volume of business activity would also be greatly reduced. IT is therefore an area in which there is no shortage of jobs, and many more are created each day. IT training will be the subject of this article.
What the training consists of
The typical college or university IT study program consists of a courses devoted exclusively to one or another of the many computer operating systems and programming languages, including Word, Adobe Acrobat, ListServ, Microsoft Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Excel and ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library). Many of these topics are divided among several courses that must be taken consecutively. Other classes deal with general topics, such as:
computer basics
giving presentations
business writing
directory update system training
Students undergoing IT training are taught both in the classroom and in actual computer labs. They learn not just the bare mechanics of using computer programs but also how to use them effectively to serve the purpose that they were meant to serve. For instance, a workshop in database design might teach how to get from a database the information you need and at the same time steer clear of any design flaws that could pose a threat the integrity thereof. Assignments may consist of computer programs or presentations which they hand in either as printouts or on CD-ROM, or email to the instructor.
Health IT
Health IT is in many ways an independent field of knowledge rather than a branch of IT. It involves the application of IT principles to hospitals and clinics, managing the exchange of information among physicians, administrators, government agents and others. Many two- and four-year colleges have training programs in health IT that lead to a certificate in the field.
Things that are important to know
One of the most important accomplishments to make while training in IT is to acquire practical knowledge and skills. This is even more important than receiving a diploma or a certificate. It is not enough to simply read the required material and pass all the tests. When you look for a job in IT, the person responsible for hiring will want you to actually demonstrate how well you can do the work. If it becomes clear that you do not, then no matter how good you may look on paper, you will not get the job. You will be measured by the degree to which you can actually apply what you have learned.
Another thing is that when trying to decide which training program is best for you, it is substance that matters more than anything else. How good are the course materials? How competent are the trainers? How supportive will the instructor be? How skilled are the trainers? What about counseling facilities? All these questions, and more, should be answered before you make your final decision.
