Cancun Is Safe

by Robert Nickel

Cancun, Mexico is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is blessed with precious and rare ecosystems within ancient cenotes, as well as centuries old ruins from some of the earliest civilisations on earth. Unfortunately, some of the activities in a few border towns in Mexico have overshadowed the beauty of the country. Have you ever lived in a place that you thoroughly enjoyed: every store, every restaurant, all the parks and natural beauty was just lovely? Yet perhaps there was one street or one part of town where you knew it was not safe to go and thus stayed away. Every city has that area; it is just a part of human existence. Nevertheless, it probably didn't lessen your love for the other parts of town, or stop you from traveling around freely without fear of danger. This is the case with Mexico, plain and simple.

As a start, consider just how large Mexico really is, from border to border and coast to coast. Mexico's total area is more than 761,000 square miles, making it the 14th largest nation in the world. To put that in perspective, Texas could fit comfortably inside Mexico 2.75 times. It is a pretty large country. There is, unfortunately, violence that is a by-product of the handful of Mexico-US border towns that are deeply immersed in the drug trade. But consider the fact that Cancun is approximately 1343 miles from the Mexico-US border. The negative news that we hear coming out of Mexico, actually takes place along the border, which is really not too far from the Florida panhandle at only 500 miles away.

Additionally there is something else to think about: if the entirety of Mexico was unsafe, then international governments would be issuing widespread travel warnings for the entire nation. Alternatively, a statement has been issued by the US State Department: "The government of Mexico works hard to protect U.S. citizens and other visitors to major tourist destinations. Drug-related violence and crime that is reported in the border region of Mexico, and in areas along major drug trafficking routes, are not seen in resort areas and tourist destinations."

Let's also take a look at the highly varied crime rates in Mexico. The murder rate per 100,000 in Cancun in 2011 was five, as related by the Mexico tourism board. That is lower than the national rate in the US, and on par with states such as Wyoming and Montana (according to USA Today).

Cancun relies profoundly in tourism income, and the truth is that Cancun is about as safe as any town, in any country, that targets tourist dollars. The local business owners and government will do everything possible to protect that income, and protecting the peace is first priority.
