Business Startups For Older Women

by Marilyn Katz

Older workers are facing a tough job market right now. Women may be having a particularly hard time. However, many women are deciding to break free from the normal job market by starting their own small business. Find out if any new business ideas would work for you!

What are some good ideas for business startups for women over 50? The best ideas incorporate the skills, experience, and personality of the business owners. Let us consider a sample of new businesses so you can see if any of them appeal to you.

First consider your past experiences. Consider your past work experience, interests, or hobbies. In my experience, most people do well when they do what they like.

Do you enjoy baking or cooking? A niche bakery or catering service may be ideal for you.

The biggest issue may be cooking facilities. Most cities require a commercial kitchen if you plan to cook food to sell to the public. However, there are some innovative ways to accomplish this without spending hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some chirches, or other community orgainizations, do not use their own commercial kitchens every day. They are willing to lease time for very reasonable rates. You could get a mobile food truck. This would be less costly than a permanent building. If you can get a used mobile kitchen, for an affordable price, you can always resell it if your idea does not work out.

Have you ever thought about writing or publishing? Lots of women dream of becoming writers. Today's publishers and writers are not limited to the big publishing houses. You might get started on the Internet with a very small investment. You might even be able to find a publisher who will print on demand. If you do not want to print your books, you can sell them in an electronic format.

Your new idea could even be simpler than the first two. You can find simple needs, and then fill them for money! This could be as simple as providing day care in your home or taking seniors to doctor's appointments.

Have you heard of social business? If you can match people together, you may be able to prosper. You can act as a middle man, with lower overhead than the traditional companies that provide these services. If you can help people connect with other people, you can find a way to profit, and you can probably feel very good about your business.

There is not one perfect business for every older woman. If you actually approach the task with an open mind, you will probably come up with a lot of great ideas.
