Stop Letting Everyone Cut in Front of You

Are your children involved in lessons and activities that you have the time to take them to, while you miss another week of yoga class or the gym? Do you have the money for their activities but don't believe that you have it to spend when it's something that you want to do for yourself? Or when you're busy working on your "to do" list and you get an email, being a giving and caring person, do you respond to the sender's needs and then it takes up your time so that one or more things on your "to do" list go undone that day?

Is there something that you've wanted to do for yourself for so long, something simple that will improve the quality of your life, your health or just make you happy? Before you know it, weeks, months and maybe even years have past. Why aren't you willing to invest the time or money when it's for you instead of someone else? Does this sound familiar to you?

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to say that I am talking to myself and not just to you in this article. As a busy working parent, I get it and constantly have to remind myself that I matter and that I need to take care of me too. We need to invest in ourselves so that we can give to others. By doing that, you are not being selfish and by putting other people first, to the exclusion of your needs, it may not even serve them in the end. There is a reason why they tell you on an airplane to put your own oxygen mask on before helping your child.

So what does this have to do with food? Well, the way we do anything is the way we do everything. Food is essential for us to live. It also gives us pleasure. Do you have enough energy throughout the day? Are you within range of the weight that works for you? How often do you take the time to focus on your nutritional needs or make a meal that you love? Do you even know how to begin?

Here are some tips to help you do that:

- Make sure that you have the food in the house that you enjoy and will support you through the day. Take the time to be prepared to have food on hand for you.

- Make a good meal for yourself, something that you really love. It doesn't have to be complicated. Take the time to plan, shop and cook. Then sit down at the table and eat a meal that is delicious and nourishes you.

- Make plans to meet a friend for lunch. Pick a place where can make a healthy selection and make time to enjoy a meal and the company of a friend.

- Make a decision to do something that you've wanted to do for you. Maybe you want to learn more about eating well and how to shop for and prepare healthy and delicious food. You have said at some point that you will do it. Do it now.

Stop letting people cut so far ahead of you that you never get to your place in line.

Action Steps:

- Make a decision to take time for yourself everyday. Yes, everyday, even if it's just a few minutes.

- Make a list of things that you enjoy for breakfast.

- Make a list of things that you enjoy for lunch.

- Go to the market and buy the ingredients for the meals that you like to eat that will support you throughout your busy day.

- Make yourself a delicious and nourishing meal tomorrow, any time of day. Even if it's something that you just assemble rather than cook. Sit down somewhere quietly and take the time to enjoy it.
