Clogged AC Filters Increase Energy Consumption So Buy New Filters Regularly

by Shane Hester

Almost every home in America has an air conditioner but not all homeowners know how it works and how to take care of it. In most cases, people who own air conditioners are clueless when it comes to proper usage of the equipment. And when it breaks, they shout all sort of nonsense words: What a piece of useless appliance! You are killing me with the heat! C'mon, work work work!

Are you one of those people who talk back their air conditioner? If you are guilty, then, it is ok. We all are guilty of this since in our minds, air conditioner are supposed to provide ease and comfort at home. This is the purpose of an AC, right? So how come it does not blow out the cold air you need from it? It is understandable to be angry if it does not work right.

The problem is that you are also the reason why the air conditioner is not functioning as it is supposed to be. Why? Because, an air conditioner is not a living thing! It does not check itself for troubles and repairs. It cannot tell you - hey, you need look at my AC filters and change it. The air conditioner cannot do that. So if you want your equipment to work well, you as the owner have to take extra measures in keeping the air conditioner in tiptop shape.

It serves as a double purpose, you know. A well-maintained air conditioner performs its "duties" and with that, you save energy. A non-performing air conditioner can consume too much energy and thus, your electricity bill increases. This is a hard fact.

Now, if you do not want that to happen to you, there is one solution. Learn ho to check your AC every now and then before a big problem ensues. If you are unsure of what to do, here are some simple things to remember:

1. AC filters need to be replace once a month or once every two months.

2. Once a month, you have to clean the coil of your outside condenser. Hosing off the dirt will do.

3. If the air blown is getting warm, your AC is low on freon. It has to be replaced.

Of course, these terms are new to you and you do not know which is which. It is better to call an AC specialist to handle complicated repairs for you. And with that, you can ask what is the AC filter and how to replace it. Also, ask a way on how to clean the coil without damaging the AC too. Lastly, be sure to call on them before your AC goes low on freon. With these ways, you can save on the bill and learn how to maintain your AC.
